MCAT

One-on-one MCAT preparation
A Focused Plan for a Broad, Demanding Exam
MCAT preparation can become unfocused quickly. The exam draws on several sciences and asks students to apply that knowledge through passage-based reasoning over more than six hours of content. We build an individualized plan around the subjects and skills that need the most work, then use one-on-one instruction, targeted practice, and a study tracker to keep preparation organized.
The plan can include Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. The balance depends on where the student needs stronger content knowledge, clearer reasoning, or more deliberate pacing.

Two Phases, One Connected Study Plan
Content Review
Build or rebuild the foundational material through review books, video lessons, Anki, and one-on-one instruction based on the student’s needs.
→
Application
Apply that foundation through practice questions, UWorld, passage sets, full-length exams, and careful review.
Throughout both phases
Planning and Tracking
We use an individualized study plan and tracker to organize weekly goals, completed work, weak areas, and practice performance.
The Current MCAT at a Glance
The MCAT is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam with four sections. The science and behavioral-science sections combine passage-based sets with independent questions. CARS is entirely passage-based.
How We Approach MCAT Preparation
Most students need both content review and practice, but not in the same proportion. We usually organize MCAT preparation into two broad phases. The first focuses on learning or rebuilding the foundational content. The second focuses on applying that knowledge through practice questions and full-length exams. The phases can overlap, and the balance depends on the student’s starting point, available study time, and test date.
Content Review
During content review, we work through the subjects that need the most attention. Depending on the student, that may include review books, video lessons, Anki, and one-on-one teaching. Tutoring is particularly useful when a student recognizes a topic but cannot explain it clearly, connect it to related ideas, or apply it in a passage.
The purpose is not to complete every available resource. We want the student to understand the foundational material well enough to recognize when it is being tested and use it in unfamiliar contexts. The amount of time spent in content review varies substantially from student to student.
Application
As the foundation becomes stronger, more of the schedule shifts toward application. We use practice questions, UWorld, passage sets, and full-length exams to help the student apply content, improve reasoning, manage time, and build endurance.
The review after each set or exam matters as much as completing the questions. We look at why a question was missed or uncertain, whether the issue was content, reasoning, passage interpretation, timing, or execution, and what should change before the next round of practice.
Content and Skills We Cover
Support can concentrate on one section or connect work across the exam. Depending on the student’s needs, tutoring may address:
Biology and Biochemistry
Review foundational material and practice applying it within research passages and experimental contexts.
Chemistry and Physics
Work through concepts, calculations, data, and the reasoning needed to use them in unfamiliar situations.
Psychology and Sociology
Strengthen core concepts and apply them to behavior, research methods, social processes, and passage-based questions.
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
Practice comprehension and reasoning within and beyond the passage without relying on outside subject knowledge.
Scientific Reasoning and Data Interpretation
Interpret studies, figures, relationships, and conclusions while keeping the passage’s evidence in view.
Pacing and Problem Solving
Develop more deliberate timing, recognize when an approach is consuming too much time, and make efficient decisions.
Current MCAT Format
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems | 59 | 95 minutes |
| Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills | 53 | 90 minutes |
| Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems | 59 | 95 minutes |
| Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior | 59 | 95 minutes |
Test-Day Sequence
The standard sequence includes a 4-minute certification, an optional 10-minute tutorial, the four exam sections, optional breaks of 10, 30, and 10 minutes, a 3-minute score-or-void question, and an optional 5-minute survey.
Check-in procedures use part of each break, and unused break time does not carry forward. An unscheduled break does not stop the exam timer.
Scoring
Each section is scored from 118 to 132. The four section scores are added for a total score from 472 to 528. Wrong answers receive no additional penalty, so students should answer every question.
Current format and scoring details are based on AAMC’s MCAT structure and scoring guidance.
