Math Tutoring
When a student is getting math problems wrong, one of the first things we try to understand is where the process is breaking down. The difficulty may begin with the current topic, an earlier algebra gap, the wording of the problem, an inefficient setup, or a small execution error that keeps repeating.
Our sessions are built around the student’s current math class. We use class notes, homework, textbook problems, review packets, practice exams, teacher feedback, and the student’s own questions to decide what needs attention first.

Find the Source of the Difficulty
An earlier algebra gap can appear again in Geometry, Precalculus, Statistics, or Calculus. In other cases, the student understands a formula but has trouble translating a word problem, choosing a starting point, or recognizing which information is useful. Some students set up problems correctly and then lose points through rushing or avoidable calculation errors. Cumulative tests can reveal several of these issues at once.
We look at how the student approached the work, not only whether the final answer was correct. That gives us something specific to teach, practice, or change.
Teach the Idea Before Repeating Problems
When the underlying idea is unclear, completing a longer problem set usually repeats the same confusion. We first explain the concept and connect it to skills the student already knows. If one explanation is not working, we try another representation, example, or method.
Once the idea is clear, practice becomes more useful. We vary the form of the problem so the student learns to recognize when a method applies rather than relying on a memorized sequence.
Work Through Problems Together
A tutor may model the first solution while explaining each decision, then ask the student to take over more of the process. We may break a complex problem into smaller pieces, compare two methods, ask the student to explain the reasoning, or return to the point where an error first appeared.
As understanding improves, we reduce prompts and ask the student to choose the setup, carry out the work, and check whether the answer makes sense.
Use the Student’s Class Materials
Immediate classwork often gives us the clearest starting point. We work from assigned homework, notes, review packets, textbook problems, practice exams, and teacher comments while also addressing any earlier skill the current unit depends on.
This balance helps with the assignment or assessment in front of the student without leaving the same foundational problem to appear again in the next unit.

Foundations and Secondary Math
Arithmetic, pre-algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, Statistics, and Calculus.
AP Mathematics
AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC, including conceptual review, multi-step problems, cumulative practice, and preparation for class assessments and AP exams.
Advanced and College-Level Mathematics
Advanced and college-level support includes multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and advanced statistics.
Prepare for Tests and Exams
For a quiz or unit test, we identify the topics most likely to cause trouble and build a short plan around them. Midterms, finals, AP exams, and cumulative college exams usually require a broader review, so we help the student organize earlier units, decide what to practice first, and leave time to revisit mistakes.
Between sessions, the student may receive targeted problems or a study schedule tied to the next assessment. We track how the work is going, share updates with parents, and adjust the plan when the student’s needs or class schedule changes.
Build Mathematical Independence
Students may initially need help deciding how to begin, selecting a method, or checking their work. Over time, we ask them to make more of those decisions themselves. We want the student to become better able to break down unfamiliar problems, explain the reasoning, notice errors, and prepare for assessments with less outside structure.
Tell Us What the Student Is Working On
Tell us which math class the student is taking, the current unit, and the next assessment. We can talk through where they are getting stuck and what support would be useful.
